Unfinished Carousel by JohnKohlepp Unfinished Carousel by JohnKohlepp
This is a gift to a dear friend. She shared a poem that she wrote called "Unfinished Carousel" -- it's dreamy, melancholy spirit stayed with me, and I knew that I had to make a painting out of it.

Part of the gift had to be a faithful interpretation of the verses and spirit of the poem, and part of it had to be stepping into new artistic territory.

This painting marks my first full-blown foray into traditional materials (the fan brush is Nature's smudge tool!). I went through a lot of trial and error, but it is really amazing to me that the skills that I've picked up from digital art translate well to a physical medium.

When I read that poem, I see myself as the lost rider. Thank you for not losing sight of me, Kimy.

Dearest friend John, my home got knocked about by the edge of a tornado in the night just an hour shy of my 49th. In the dark, in the damp, in the threat of more to follow, I retrieved my most prized possessions from a room before they could be covered under the destruction blanket of water damage. They weren't photos, or furniture, or jewelry, or even my clothes. I went for my art collection. Unfinished Carousel was the first.

Oh my god, Kimy! I hope things are okay, and I'll email you for more info, but I have to say how honored I am that you saved your art collection first when the worst happened!

finally some artwork from you again... You must know... I love your artwork. It touches something deep inside of me. Your piece "the wedding" was the first picture in my life I seriously couldn't take my eyes off... and I still can't. I don't know what it is, but it's inside of me.

Keep on that wonderful work. :+fav:

I am so glad to see something new from you hun. :hug:This is so beautiful. Mystical, sad and just breath taking at the same time. You have outdone yourself and have done an amazing job going into another medium. I can't wait to see your next piece. This would definitely be worth getting a print of. Would love to read the poem. Keep up the great work and don't be such a stranger.

John, this is so soft and tender its almost heartbreaking. Well done on tackling traditional media, it isn't easy ... like walking a highwire with no net really. You can't just make that shabby layer go away if you don't like it LOL

Always glad to see more art from your desk :)

Thank you so much, Tamaelia. The fact that you feel those things when looking at this picture means the world to me.

And yes, there were times that I wish that I could have deleted or moved layers -- or at least gone back a few steps in the history panel!

Beautiful image. It puts me in the head of the old man and gives me nostalgic feelings for roads never taken, for the magic I believed in when I was a kid.

As I told you before hun its beautiful.. and Im not suprised at all that you take so naturally to acrylics and traditional materials, because your digital stuff looks so natural all by themselves.

I hope she loves it and is truly honored to have you for a friend and to have this painting as a gift! :+favlove:
